Laser Release Therapy
How Are Lip & Tongue Ties Treated?
When treatment is recommended, restrictive oral tissues can be released with a procedure called a frenectomy or frenotomy. This treatment is designed to restore more natural movement of the tongue, lips, or cheeks and support improved function, comfort, feeding, speech development, and long-term oral growth.
At Columbus Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Kaitlynn Harvey uses advanced CO₂ laser technology to gently and precisely release restrictive tissue. This minimally invasive approach allows for excellent visualization and a controlled release with minimal bleeding, no sutures, and no need for general anesthesia or sedation. The procedure itself is very quick—often completed in just seconds.
Treatment may be performed as early as a few days after birth and can also be completed during childhood, adolescence, or adulthood. In many cases, earlier evaluation and treatment may help reduce compensatory habits and support more optimal functional development over time.
Babies are usually able to nurse immediately after treatment, and older children often notice improved tongue mobility right away. While some functional improvements may occur immediately, optimal outcomes are often supported through myofunctional therapy, speech therapy, bodywork, and home exercises when indicated.
Our goal is not only to release the restriction, but also to help guide healthy oral function, growth, and development in a supportive, family-centered environment.
