Tie Release Therapy (Frenectomies)

Gentle Solutions for Breastfeeding, Speech & Oral Function Challenges
A tongue-tie or lip-tie potentially can interfere with a child’s ability to breastfeed, speak, chew, or swallow properly, based on new and evolving research. At Columbus Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Harvey provides safe and effective frenectomy procedures to improve oral function and support healthy development.
Using advanced tools and gentle techniques, Dr. Harvey performs tongue and lip-tie releases with minimal discomfort and fast recovery. A frenectomy is a simple and quick procedure that involves removing or modifying the frenulum to release the tongue or lip-tie. This procedure is typically done in-office, often without the need for sedation, ensuring a quick and comfortable experience for both child and parent.

What is a Tongue-Tie or Lip-Tie?
A tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) or lip-tie occurs when the frenum—the small piece of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth or the upper lip to the gums— is too short or thick. This can limit movement and cause challenges with breastfeeding, speaking, eating, and even maintaining proper oral hygiene.
While some children may have a minor tie that doesn’t require treatment, others may experience significant difficulties. It’s important to address these concerns early to prevent long-term issues with feeding, speech, and overall oral function.

Signs Your Child May Need a Frenectomy:
- Trouble latching or breastfeeding
- Clicking sounds or poor weight gain during feeding
- Speech delays or articulation issues
- Difficulty sticking out the tongue or moving it freely
- Restricted upper lip
If you suspect that a tongue- or lip-tie may be affecting your child’s development, Dr. Harvey is happy to discuss your concerns, complete a thorough evaluation, and explore the most effective treatment options to support your child’s growth and development.
